Alize Johnson’s current contract

Pre-summer league, nobody knew what kind of deal Johnson would get. He could have gotten a two-way contract or he could pull in an NBA deal. The dual options were fascinating for fans of the minutiae.

After an impressive summer league, Alize ultimately inked a two-year deal with the Pacers, with the first season fully guaranteed.

I want to explain the contract better, but I have seen conflicting reports about the deal. Every source has told me that the first season of the contract is fully guaranteed, so we know that he will be making $838,464 and playing for the Indiana Pacers for the entirety of the coming season.

The second season, however, is where things get confusing. Basketball Insiders salary guru Eric Pincus has the second season as fully non-guaranteed, with a guarantee date of July 15th, 2019. This means if Johnson is waived before that date, his entire second-year salary ($1,416,852) comes off of the cap sheet.

But Keith Smith of Real GM has the deal slightly over half guaranteed. According to Smith, Johnson will be paid $761,536 no matter what and the rest of that $1.4 million will guarantee on that July 15th date.

Who knows how much of Alize’s deal is guaranteed in year two. But what we know for sure is he will be playing for the team at the minimum for at least one season.

It should be noted that this contract was literally all the Pacers could offer Johnson. Because they were out of cap space and exceptions, the only contract they could offer Alize was a minimum exception deal. Those can only be up to two years in length. If the Pacers had cap space left or any exceptions available to them, they could have given Johnson more years, but that was not possible given the timing of the signing. The did all they could.
