For a long time, the debate about the best shooter in NBA history revolved around Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Larry Bird, and a few others. But given how prolific Stephen Curry has become, many now believe the 27-year-old MVP has taken the crown for his own.
He has already broken and re-broken the record for most 3-pointers made in the regular season, and now he is about to break Reggie Miller’s record for 3s in a playoffs.
Last night, Curry made 5 triples to bring him within one of the record 58 treys that Reggie hit during the Indiana Pacers run to the NBA Finals in 2000. The amazing part is that it took Miller 22 games to make 58 while Steph has gotten to 57 in just 12 outings.
Of course, Curry’s greatness is not even debatable. But him sticking so many 3s in so few games is also about the league moving towards a more 3-point-heavy philosophy overall. Another Miller stat shows just how much the league has changed in the past two decades: Reggie’s 38 made 3-pointers were the most of any player during the 1998 playoffs, while four players hit 40 or more last postseason.
This isn’t to take anything away from Steph — or Reggie. Both are incredible, and it isn’t like many players are making 40 or more per playoffs even now. (Interesting, Paul George led the league last year with 52 made triples.)
Kobe Bryant, in an enigmatic tweet, expressed the impossibility of defending a player who shoots like Steph does.
As Ray Allen did before him, Curry is out to break all of Reggie’s remaining records.
This one should fall on Saturday.
