Post-Game Grades: Pacers Lose Sixth Straight as James Harden Scores 44 Points

The Good: The Indiana Pacers made a mammoth run in the third quarter to get back in a game that earlier had looked more likely to end in a 30-point margin than anything. They outscored the Rockets 25-15 in the first 10 minutes of the period, hitting 11-of-20 shots including 3-for-4 from long range.

The Bad: The defense. Again. They fouled way too much (James Harden alone made 21-of-22 free throws and the team made 35-of-37), and couldn’t get stops or protect the 3-point line.

MVP: James Harden. He was impeccable, getting by Pacers players at will. George Hill did a better job later, but by then Harden was already cooking and nobody could stop him from sealing the game for Houston late.

LVP: Solomon Hill. What a disaster. He committed 5 — FIVE — turnovers in the first quarter, and nearly singlehandedly ensured that the Pacers would dig their own ditch this evening.

X Factor: The aforementioned free throws. Cynics will look at the free-throw attempt disparity — 37 for Houston, 19 for Indiana — and cry about bad officiating. But the Rockets simply forced the issue much more than the Pacers, and Harden earned nearly all of those attempts, however you feel about his style of play. Nobody was staying in front of him and he attacked all night long while Indiana was passive and reactionary on both ends.

David West, PF 31 MIN | 4-13 FG | 2-4 FT | 4 REB | 5 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | +1 +/-This dude been looking like he gonna sign with a glue factory next year.
Solomon Hill, SF 25 MIN | 2-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 5 PTS | -4 +/-Worst game as a Pacer.
Roy Hibbert, C 32 MIN | 8-12 FG | 2-2 FT | 10 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 18 PTS | +4 +/-Big fella came to play and he has been stepping it up in several games now — just as half his buddies decide to take the rest of the season off.
George Hill, PG 36 MIN | 9-15 FG | 0-1 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 3 BLK | 1 TO | 20 PTS | -1 +/-Beast. He, Roy, and C.J. Watson were the only reason the Pacers were able to claw their way back and turn this into a competition.
C.J. Miles, SG 32 MIN | 3-16 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 6 PTS | -9 +/-Nyet.
Luis Scola, PF 17 MIN | 3-8 FG | 3-6 FT | 7 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 9 PTS | -11 +/-He’s still getting some nice numbers, but as it has felt for a bit now … seem a bit hollow, Didn’t impact this game as much as a nice 9/7 line in 17 minutes would suggest. And make your free throws.
Damjan Rudez, SF 21 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 7 PTS | -9 +/-Relatively fine, got a dunk by being heads up running the floor and drilled a 3. Made one of more puzzling turnovers I’ve seen in a while, but win some, lose some.
Ian Mahinmi, C 15 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-0 FT | 8 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 2 PTS | -13 +/-Boardwork.
C.J. Watson, PG 30 MIN | 7-10 FG | 5-6 FT | 2 REB | 5 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 23 PTS | -8 +/-Ya done well, kid. Ya done really well.
