Tyrese Haliburton should want the Indiana Pacers to stay vigilant on the trade market this summer. Recent rumors have indicated that Anthony Edwards may be hoping that the Minnesota Timberwolves shake things up, and while the Pacers don’t necessarily need big changes, they shouldn’t be resting on their laurels, either.
Indiana made their big-swing move at the trade deadline this year, landing Ivica Zubac from the LA Clippers. But that doesn’t mean they can’t make another move this summer. They have enough pieces to add a quality player alongside their current trio, and at the very least, Haliburton should want them to keep their eyes and ears open.
The Pacers are in a good spot, but it could always be better.
Tyrese Haliburton should want Pacers to at least be open to trades this summer
According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Edwards may not be too pleased with the current state of the Timberwolves’ roster right now:
“Going forward after this series, the Minnesota Timberwolves future is in question. Somewhat because of what Ant feels about the roster.”
Haliburton shouldn’t feel that way about the Pacers. This team (with Myles Turner on it instead of Zubac) just made the NBA Finals one year ago. It’s good enough to compete.
That said, staying complacent is never smart in the NBA, especially considering so many teams got better this past year, and the Pacers were stuck in a gap year because of Haliburton’s injury.
Indiana doesn’t necessarily need to make any major changes this summer, but Haliburton should want them to at least think about copying the Edwards way of things.
The Pacers shouldn’t be completely closed off to making trades. At the very least, to help Haliburton have the best chance of competing for a championship, they should keep a close eye on the trade market.
Because if the right deal pops up, the Pacers should be willing to lunge at it, because it’s impossible to know what future seasons hold when it comes to the title picture.
Perhaps Indiana doesn’t have to be quite as extreme as Edwards may want Minnesota to be, but it should be open to making deals.
Combining the right salaries could help the Pacers match a pretty big contract in a trade, and if they could bring back the right player, they could seriously increase their title odds.
Much like Edwards wants the Wolves to consider changes this summer, Haiburton should hope that the Pacers are at least willing to keep an eye on potential deals.
