Pacers were able to get Pascal Siakam because he refused a trade somewhere else
By Ryan Stano
One of the biggest moves that the Indiana Pacers have made in the middle of a season in franchise history occurred last season. They traded three first-round picks and two players for Pascal Siakam. Siakam was excellent when he came over to Indiana and helped them make the Eastern Conference Finals.
Part of the reason why Indiana made that big of a move is because they were very confident that he was going to re-sign in Indy. Otherwise, they wouldn't have made that bold move. Now that he's re-signed, it was clearly a good move for them because he's still in his prime.
It sounds like the Pacers weren't the only suitors for Siakam. Both he and OG Anunoby were highly coveted around the trade deadline. It looks like one of the reasons why Indiana was able to get Siakam is because he refused a trade somewhere else.
The Pacers were able to get Pascal Siakam because he refused a trade to the Sacramento Kings
Siakam knew that he was wanted by many other organizations. One organization that wanted him was Sacramento. The Kings actually tried to trade for him, but apparently Siakam refused the trade. According to a report from Sam Amick of the Athletic, it was because of previous comments made about his style of game by members of the organization.
Once those comments got back to Siakam, he did not want to be a part of them. Toronto respected him so much that they decided to honor his wishes and not send him there. He clearly wouldn't have re-signed back in Sacramento had they decided to send him there anyway.
The Kings' incompetence is once again the Pacers' gain. They stole Tyrese Haliburton from them and now they were able to get Siakam too because they screwed up. It's good to see Indiana was able to benefit. Now they have two stars thanks to the Kings.
