With Pascal Siakam signed, this is the Pacers' next priority in free agency
By Ryan Stano
The Indiana Pacers have re-signed Pascal Siakam to a four-year $189.5 million deal. It's a max deal that ties him with Indiana for the rest of his prime. It's the result that everyone was hoping for after the Pacers traded three first-round picks, Bruce Brown, and Jordan Nwora for him.
Siakam was Indiana's top priority this offseason. They wanted to make sure that they brought him back. Now that has happened, they can move on and start making some other moves. Siakam was actually the first domino to fall when it comes to free agency in the entire league.
So now that it's done, where do the Pacers go from now? What is their top priority moving forward? Is it trying to re-sign Obi Toppin? He just had the best season of his career and he won't be cheap. Is it figuring out what trade pieces they have and are willing to part with?
The top priority remaining for the Indiana Pacers in free agency
Now it's time for Indiana to decide what they wan to do with Toppin. What they want to do with him signals what their thinking is with Jarace Walker, who is their biggest trade piece. Re-signing Toppin means it's almost guaranteed that the Pacers trade Walker in search of a win-now piece.
If they let Toppin walk, that might signal that they want Walker to start getting real minutes in the rotation. He could slide into that backup power forward spot. If he plays well enough defensively, he could close some games depending on what the matchup is.
Figuring out what to do with Toppin will lead them to decide what other trade pieces they wan to part with. They could decide to move on from T.J. McConnell while his stock is high. Teams have inquired about Andrew Nembhard as well, but they seem less inclined to ship him out.
It's very good for Indiana to get the Siakam contract done as soon as possible. Now, they can figure out how to compliment him and Haliburton the best possible way for the next four years.
