Details emerge surrounding Johnny Furphy's new injuries
The Indiana Pacers drafted Australia's Johnny Furphy in the second round just a few months ago. Known for his well-rounded game, especially as a shooter, there is some hope that Furphy could contribute to the team immediately. This was especially true after his promising Summer League showcase. However, at least for now, expectations for Furphy may need to be tempered.
Johnny Furphy has injuries to both of his ankles
According to head coach Rick Carlisle, per SI.com's Tony East, the rookie wing is battling injuries in both of his ankles. Furthermore, it seems that Furphy tweaked his second ankle today, and per East, "has been in and out of practices."
At this stage, it is too soon to panic about Furphy's status. It seems like a minor injury given that he is not fully sidelined. However, other reports have indicated that Carlisle plans to give Furphy, among other players, tomorrow off of practice for a chance to heal.
Something to keep an eye on, however, is that Indiana's first preseason game is less than a week away. Because of this, his status is certainly worth monitoring as it is possible Furphy may sit the game out.
While Furphy's injury news on its own is a bit worrying, it is doubly so considering it is not the only injury the Pacers are dealing with so far.
During his Media Day appearance on Monday, Carlisle revealed that James Wiseman, who the Pacers signed as a free agent early in the offseason, is dealing with a groin injury. This injury will limit him during training camp.
Wiseman, like Furphy, is a player some Pacers fans were hopeful could provide a boost to the team right away. Despite his NBA career not panning out to this point, Wiseman provides size and athleticism, which the team needs, and has the chance to turn things around.
Currently, the Pacers stand as one of the most exciting teams in the Eastern Conference. They made it to the conference finals for the first time since 2014, and despite ultimately losing to the eventual champion Boston Celtics, they played well and showed they are a serious threat.
The Pacers do not begin the 2024-25 regular season until October 23, when they go on the road to face the Detroit Pistons. By that point, Furphy should be healthy enough to play and showcase his talents on the court if his number gets called.
