According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Indiana Pacers have signed Kelly Oubre Jr. to a two-year, nearly $17 million contract. And this proves one thing: They are trying to help Tyrese Haliburton win a championship. Oubre is a win-now piece. A solid 3-and-D wing. Someone who can help them win right away.
Ever since Haliburton went down with his Achilles injury, the Pacers haven’t slowed down. They’ve committed to helping Haliburton and Pascal Siakam win at the highest level, spending when they’ve needed to and trading draft capital when they’ve needed to. It’s all about winning a title with Haliburton.
Oubre will help the Pacers a lot.
Kelly Oubre Jr. signing further proves that Pacers are going for it all
The biggest reason the Pacers were able to make the NBA Finals last year was because of their depth. Obviously, Haliburton and Siakam were huge, but Indiana’s depth was elite.
Andrew Nembhard stepped up in the playoffs. Obi Toppin played a huge role for them. Myles Turner gave Indiana solid minutes. TJ McConnell was elite. And Aaron Nesmith was one of the most important players on the entire roster.
That’s the way the Pacers win basketball games. They have great depth. They depend on all of the guys coming off the bench to make an impact. Oubre can be one of those guys.
Oubre has made a career out of playing hard on defense, scoring the ball pretty well, and providing teams with decent three-point shooting. That’s exactly what he’ll bring to the Pacers’ bench behind Nesmith.
Last year with the Philadelphia 76ers, Oubre appeared in 50 games, playing 31.5 minutes per contest. He averaged 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals while shooting 46.7% from the floor and 36.0% from deep on 4.8 three-point attempts per contest.
This signing is merely the latest in the Pacers’ string of decisions, all with the goal of helping Haliburton win a championship. That’s the only goal in Indiana right now.
The Pacers weren’t afraid to trade draft picks to land Ivica Zubac, who is a guy who will help Haliburton deep into the playoffs. And now, they spent real money to bring in a valuable rotation piece in Oubre.
Indiana is going for it. The Pacers want to win. They want to win with Haliburton. And this Oubre signing is only further proof of that.
Watch out for the Pacers next year. They’re going to be back in the mix.
