The Minnesota Timberwolves have been chasing a point guard to pair alongside Anthony Edwards for years. And they finally landed one with their trade for LaMelo Ball. It feels like a lot of teams around the NBA are searching for a top-notch point guard. Luckily for the Indiana Pacers, they already have theirs in Tyrese Haliburton.
Haliburton already proved that he’s capable of leading a team to the NBA Finals back in 2025. He’s one of the best point guards in the NBA (as long as he comes back well from his Achilles injury). They don’t have to trade for Ball or find a point guard like Jalen Brunson in free agency.
Indiana already has one of the best point guards in the game.
Everyone wants point guards, but the Pacers already have Tyrese Haliburton
Almost all of the best teams in the league right now have a great point guard. It’s slowly becoming a staple. Everyone wants to have a high-level ball-handler leading their offense.
As noted, the Timberwolves have been seeking out a point guard for a long, long time. They tried D’Angelo Russell, but that didn’t work out. Mike Conley was a solid option for them, but he’s getting up there in age.
It was time for them to take a swing at a long-term solution at the point guard position, and Ball is just that. His playmaking and three-point shooting should seriously help Edwards moving forward.
Look at the New York Knicks. They just won an NBA Championship, and Brunson was the driving force behind their success. He’s one of the best point guards in the league.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are led by an elite ball-handler in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He’s a two-time MVP (two years in a row) who can score, playmake, and create at an extremely high level.
Even the San Antonio Spurs, who are led by Victor Wembanyama, have made moves to acquire point guard talent. They traded for De’Aaron Fox, and after that, they got to draft Dylan Harper. All while having Stephon Castle on the team already.
Having elite point guard play is as important as ever in the NBA. The Ball trade proves that even further. If you want to win at the highest level, it’s almost a prerequisite.
The Pacers have it already. They have Haliburton. He’s one of the best passers in the league, and when it comes to shot-making, he’s just as elite.
They are set up beautifully.
