Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard has quickly turned into one of the top defensive guards in the NBA, and it is about time the rest of the basketball world sees that.
Recently, Sam Vecenie spoke about Nembhard's ability to make life hard on opposing guards, calling it "his superpower." Pacers fans have known for a while exactly how good the Canadian native can be on defense, and it seems like everybody else is beginning to catch on as well (h/t Sam Vecenie of the Game Theory Podcast).
"I thought Nembhard was so good at dealing with opposing guards this year. I think that that is really his skillset. That's really his superpower: being able to handle opposing guards and making their lives miserable just by making them work," Vecenie said.
Nembhard has played a big role on the defensive side of the ball for Indiana, and that was especially noticeable during their most recent playoff run.
With Tyrese Haliburton out for next season, Nembhard will be in line for his biggest role so far as a member of the Pacers. He is set to be the team's primary point guard for the full season, and he will be heavily relied upon as Indiana looks to remain competitive despite many anticipating a down year.
Andrew Nembhard could reach unexpected heights next season
Not only is Nembhard in for the biggest role of his career so far, but the Pacers' offense will likely look completely different next season as they play to his strengths. This should give the Gonzaga alum a prime opportunity to have a career year and show everybody exactly what he is capable of.
Without Haliburton, Indiana is not likely to have the same run-and-gun system that they have become known for. Instead, the team will most likely slow things down a bit and run a more traditional offense with set plays in the half-court. It's not ideal, but this is the right move to get the most out of Nembhard and the rest of the offense.
One aspect of Nembhard's game to keep an eye on throughout next season is how taking on a bigger offensive role could negatively impact his defense. With him having to use a lot of his energy as the lead point guard on the offensive side of the ball, it is fair to assume that his defense may take a hit. Regardless, this is something that will be worth keeping an eye on during the season and, if they make it, the playoffs.
There is a lot to like about Nembhard's game, and it will be exciting to see what he can make of his opportunity next season. Pacers fans already know exactly how much of an impact Nembhard makes on the team, but his impact is no longer a secret, and he is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
