"Do you think the Pacers will still negotiate an extension for Myles  in the next month?"

The latest reports on the Myles Turner contract situation say that he has rebuffed Indiana’s contract extension offers. I have to say that this sounds like bad news. Myles Turner has been subject to trade rumors for years, and even though he’s finally playing his desired role on the court and having a career year because of it, the allure of a summer on the open market is very strong.

We don’t currently have insight into the structure of the extension proposal that Turner turned down. It could be that the Pacers offered a relatively low-ball deal just to get the negotiations started with the expectation that it would be rebuffed. If that’s the case, then there’s still plenty of time for negotiation before the trade deadline on February 9. I say trade deadline instead of extension deadline because if Turner isn’t extended, it’s an absolute must that he gets traded.

I, for one, am fully on board with a Myles Turner extension. Turner is playing like a top-5 center in the league this year. He’s exactly the type of player that Pacers fans would be clamoring to trade for if he was playing for another team this year instead of ours. Turner fits the timeline of our young core, fits with the personality of this squad, and most importantly, he’s really dang good. In the end, what matters most is whether Myles wants to be here or not. I think there are plenty of reasons for him to want that, and there are some good reasons why he would want to explore free agency.

The Pacers should and will continue to negotiate with Myles Turner, and I really hope that they can come to an agreement to keep Myles in Indy for the length of another contract.
