The Indiana Pacers began their first round of pre-draft workouts on Wednesday.
It’s officially draft season for the Indiana Pacers. This week marks the first time the Pacers will invite 2021 NBA Draft prospects in for individual workouts and get a feel for these players. Six players were invited to the first draft workout. One player, in particular, we will focus on is Tre Mann.
Tre Mann is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound sophomore guard out of Florida who opened people’s eyes with a growth spurt and stellar play this past season. Mann averaged some pretty nice stats for the Gators as he scored 16 points, grabbed 5.6 rebounds, and dished out 3.5 assists per game all while making First Team All-SEC and leading the Gators to an NCAA tournament appearance.
Tre Mann’s game seems like it would be a great fit in today’s NBA. Mann is a deadeye shooter equipped with a silky jump shot and possesses a feathery floater in his arsenal, which are two very important skills that a modern point guard needs in the current NBA.
He also boasts an array of step-back dribble moves that create space for open looks from three-point range. Mann shot an effective field goal percentage of 53.6 percent and shot 40 percent from three last season.
Kevin O’Connor of the Ringer wrote in his draft guide that Tre Mann has shades of D’Angelo Russell and a taller Darius Garland. I believe this to be a spot-on comparison for Tre Mann. Russell and Garland are both three-point shot-creating point guards that can also make defenses pay with their pick and roll ability. This is Tre Mann’s skill set to a tee.
Mann does have some areas of his game that he will need to improve on at the next level. He will need to put on a little more weight if he wants to physically contend with the bigger guards of the league. Defense is a question mark for Mann as he will have to improve as an on-ball defender. If he can, he has the making of being a capable defender at the next level.
It will be interesting to see where Tre Mann will land in the draft. He is a projected first-round draft pick with the highest I’ve seen him going is the late lottery. Wherever he lands, I believe he will be a very solid NBA player for years to come. If he can add some weight and become a solid defender I could envision Tre Mann being a starting level point guard in the league.
