Victor Oladipo drove the pace car at the Indianapolis 500, making the Indiana Pacers guard a quite literal Indiana Pacer.

Victor Oladipo runs Indiana these days, so it is no surprise the Indiana Pacers guard was driving the pace car for the 102nd Indianapolis 500.

While they didn’t let Oladipo try to win the race, driving the pace car is just another sign this city is truly his.

With that in mind, it is no surprise that the fans loved him at the Indianapolis 500.

Oladipo joked with the media that he didn’t want to get out of the car, as well as admitted he was a little nervous about driving the car once the fans got there.

"“I’ve been trying to get one of these for myself,” he told the media before he became the first Indiana Pacers player to pace the field for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. “After a while, you don’t want to get out.”“It’s almost like when you’re shooting in an empty gym,” Oladipo told the media Saturday. “It’s completely different than when you’re shooting in a gym with 20,000 people watching you and guys trying to stop you from doing that, but I think I’ll be alright.”"

Oladipo joins a list of Indy 500 pace car drivers that includes Gen. Colin Powell, Gen. Chuck Yeager, and Guy Fieri. He is the first Indiana Pacers player to earn the honor which may come as a surprise but after a quick glance, former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jim Harbaugh is one of the few athletes that aren’t involved in auto racing to grace that list.

Afterwards, Oladipo showed his love for the fans and the city.

He also took part in Saturday’s parade, proudly wearing the Pacers “City” edition jersey as he made his way through Indianapolis. Earlier in the day he took a spin around the track in a two-seat IndyCar with Mario Andretti.

If Oladipo continues to bring success to the Indiana Pacers, being the pace car driver or the mayor of the city will only be the beginning.
