All things considered, Jarace Walker's performance during the 2025 Summer League was almost as good as Indiana Pacers fans could have asked for.

In four games, the second-year forward averaged 18 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block per game. Additionally, he shot 42.6% from the field and 45.8% from behind the three-point line.

After a disappointing rookie season, it was refreshing to see Walker show out during the Summer League and remind everybody why he was selected with the No. 8 pick in last yea'rs draft.

However, despite an overall good performance, there was one major weakness in his game--his defense. Furthermore, this is especially concerning given how underwhelming his defense looked during his rookie season.

The Pacers initially acquired Walker's draft rights from the Washington Wizards for his defensive talent and versatility. Unfortunately, none of this showed last season.

If Walker wants to contribute to the Pacers and not get lost on the depth chart, it is crucial that he addresses his defensive shortcomings and provides value where the team needs it the most.

Jarace Walker must improve his defense to become a contributor for the Pacers

It is no secret just how bad the Pacers were as a defensive team last season. Their 120.2 opp PPG was the fourth-worst in the NBA. Additionally, their 118 DRTG was the seventh-worst in the league.

The Pacers have one of the best offensive teams in the league. Additionally, their offense essentially led them to the Eastern Conference Finals just a few months ago. Despite getting swept by the eventual champion Boston Celtics in the series, the Pacers proved they belonged. Additionally, with their youth as well, Indiana should be contenders for a long time.

However, Indiana's defense is arguably the biggest thing about their team that is holding them back from becoming serious title contenders.

Walker's offense seems to have taken a large step, which is great for him and the team. However, the Pacers already have a handful of offensive-minded pleyers on the roster.

The 20-year-old still has the potential and tools to become a great defender in the NBA. If he can become that, he will help the Pacers tremendously. However, if not, he may go down as one of the team's biggest busts in recent history.
