Former Pacers draft pick Isaiah Wong finds a new home
After one year in the Indiana Pacers organization, guard Isaiah Wong officially made his departure earlier this offseason, playing for the Phoenix Suns in the Summer League. However, it seems he has found a new home roughly one week before training camp.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Wong has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Utah Jazz. Interestingly, Wong is not the only former Pacer to join the Jazz this offseason. In August, reigning G League Rookie of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe signed a two-way contract with the Jazz.
Now with the Jazz, Wong will have an opportunity to showcase his talents for their organization in training camp, though he will likely spend at least the majority of the 2024-25 campaign in the G League.
Isaiah Wong has reportedly signed a training camp deal with the Utah Jazz
Last year, the Pacers selected Wong out of the University of Miami with the 55th overall pick in the 2023 draft. Wong signed a two-way contract with the team ahead of the 2023-24 season. To say he split his time between the Pacers and their G League affiliate, the Indiana Mad Ants, is a bit of an exaggeration.
Wong spent most of last season exclusively in the G League, playing just one game for the Pacers on an NBA court. In a blowout victory against the Brooklyn Nets on April 1, Wong played four minutes, recording two points on 1-for-3 shooting from the field. Though his time on an NBA court was forgettable, the New Jersey native was impressive in the G League.
In 30 games last season for the Mad Ants, Wong averaged 14.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. Furthermore, he shot 43.7% from the field and 28.3% from beyond the arc.
Wong was selected to participate in the 2024 NBA G League Next Up Game as an injury replacement for Markquis Nowell of the Toronto Raptors organization.
The Miami alum has a lot of talent and could earn his way into an NBA rotation down the line. However, it is clear he was not going to get a major opportunity in Indiana any time soon.
Indiana already has their starting guards of the future, Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard, under contract for the long run. Furthermore, following T.J. McConnell's extension, the backup point guard spot is occupied for the foreseeable future as well.
Ultimately, moving on from Indiana was likely the best move for Wong. Hopefully for the former Pacer, he can show out in Utah and potentially earn a legitimate NBA spot in the future.
