This could be the deciding factor.

The Indiana Pacers are set to kick off their NBA Finals matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. As it stands, very few are expecting the Pacers to come out on top, but they do have something going for them that most people seem to ignore--they have what it takes to (at least slightly) neutralize Oklahoma City's historic defense due to elite ball security.

Oklahoma City ended the regular season with a 106.6 DRTG, which was the best in the NBA. Furthermore, they averaged a league-leading 10.3 steals per game, and their 5.7 blocks per game were second behind the Orlando Magic. They not only had the best defensive team in the league this season, but they have already made their mark as one of the best defensive teams in NBA history, and they are only getting better in the postseason.

The Thunder's defense has played an instrumental role in their dominant campaign, and there is no doubt that this will be the Pacers' biggest challenge so far. However, something has to give, and the Pacers' ability to take care of the ball could be a huge advantage for them.

The Pacers are among the best at taking care of the ball

One of the more important narratives to follow in the NBA Finals is which team will win the turnover battle. This is big for both teams, but it is especially so for the Pacers, who need all the advantages they can get. Oklahoma City can almost force turnovers at will, but the Pacers are one of the best teams in the league in terms of ball security and making the right passes, largely because of Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers need to play to this strength any way they can as it could help them pull off what most would consider an upset.

In the regular season, the Pacers committed just 13.2 turnovers per game. This was tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third-fewest in the NBA. They are one of the most efficient offensive teams in the league, and that has continued to be true in the playoffs. Additionally, the Pacers are one of the best when it comes to ball movement, which could make things just a bit tougher for the Thunder defensively.

A lot might have to go right in order for the Pacers to win the series, but they have exceeded expectations time and time again. As they look to win their first-ever NBA Championship, they will need to take advantage of any edge they might have. Luckily for them, one of their biggest strengths could help sway the NBA Finals in their favor.
