Indiana Pacers fans have long been excited about Johnny Furphy's potential. And on Wednesday night, he gave another reason for fans to look forward to what he can do in Indiana for the long run.
During a 115-101 loss to the Toronto Raptors, Furphy had one of the best games of his career at the NBA level. In 26 minutes, the Australian native scored a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double (the first of his career) while shooting 3-for-6 from the field. He also recorded two assists and two blocks.
Not only were his stats noteworthy, but Furphy also passed the eye test. He was incredibly aggressive and looked comfortable on the court. This was especially true in the fourth quarter, when he scored six points and went to the free-throw line twice.
Additionally, Furphy's strength was on full display as he muscled his way on the glass. Gaining muscle seemed to have been one of his biggest takeaways in the summer, and it's beginning to show in his game.
He also did an incredible job of finding his shot all night and getting easy buckets.
It's clear that there is still a lot of work for the Kansas native to do before he can comfortably be a rotation player for the Pacers. He still commits fouls at a high rate (he has recorded three or more fouls in a game in under 30 minutes seven times this season), and it looks like the game is still a bit too fast for him at times. However, it's clear that the talent is there, and Pacers fans should be excited about what he can bring for the foreseeable future.
Johnny Furphy has a bright future with the Pacers
It still remains to be seen what exactly Furphy's ceiling is. However, there is no denying that he has special talent.
Furphy is still just 21 years old. He is the youngest player on Indiana's roster, and he gradually looks better with every opportunity. At this rate, Furphy should be a legitimate contributor for the Pacers for years to come. And given that they are in a good position to re-enter the title picture once Tyrese Haliburton returns, this should be music to Pacers' fans ears.
One of the biggest problems with Indiana's season so far was that nobody really leveled up. This season was going to be all about experimentation for the team to see who could elevate their game and establish themselves as a long-term asset. But for the most part, nobody really stood out.
Fortunately for Indiana, Furphy is beginning to make a name for himself. He has started nine of his last 10 games and is constantly looking more comfortable whenever he's on the floor.
The Pacers aren't going to win many more games this season. But at the very least, they should be excited to see Furphy's development continue the rest of the way.
