Jarace Walker might develop into a real asset to the Indiana Pacers, but he's probably never going to live up to his pre-draft hype. And he might never become a consistent starter for the rest of his time in Indiana.
Walker entered the 2023 draft as a defensive specialist who could guard every position and be a physical brute. He hasn't exactly been that during his young NBA career. He often looks lost defensively, is a questionable one-on-one defender, and doesn't utilize his physicality to his advantage (though this has improved a bit).
Additionally, before this past season, there were concerns about the Houston alum's consistency, shooting, and decision-making. Fortunately for him, he is fresh off the best season of his career (11.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.5 APG, 41.9/37.4/74.9% shooting splits) and showed a bit of what he can bring to the table as a jack-of-all-trades type of player.
Walker has a lot of talent and potential. But will he ever become a star in Indiana? Absolutely not. He probably won't even become a full-time starter with the team. And the sooner he realizes that, the quicker he can find a role for himself and prove he can be an asset for years to come.
Jarace Walker will never become a star for the Pacers
In a recent episode of the "Setting the Pace" podcast, Michael Facci said he views Walker as more of a player who "can fit in" in the Pacers' system that someone who can "really stand out."
"The verdict isn't fully out on Jarace, but I just see him as more of, he can fit in rather than really stand out. And I think that so far, that can change, but for right now, I just feel like he'll shoot the ball if he's open, but he's not gonna actively be backing anyone down, really creating his own shot, and doing things where he's trying to get his consistently. And to me, I feel like his ceiling has lowered ... I don't think anyone is saying that this guy could be an All-Star," Facci said.
This is a pretty accurate assessment of Walker. He can come in and grab some boards, make some passes, and shoot the ball, but he's rarely going to be the best player on the court from this point forward.
The Pennsylvania native can do a bit of everything -- he just can't do it all at the same time. And that's the most frustrating part about him. Walker is incredibly talented and has a high ceiling, but he still struggles with applying that talent and reaching his full potential.
He's still young, so there's time for him to figure all of this out. But as it stands, Walker is leaving a lot to be desired on the court, and that doesn't bode well for his long-term future with the team.
