3. Pacers need to avoid getting caught up in “best available” in the draft.

One hallmark of a good organization is the ability to identify needs and fill them the best way possible. And while a “best available” strategy is often the best way to go into the draft, it is not ALWAYS the best way to go into the draft. Prime example? Goga Bitadze.

Sure Goga maybe had the potential to be the best player available at the moment he was drafted. But we already had two starting-level centers on the roster. Sometimes a team has a need so glaring, they need to avoid taking the player that may be marginally better, but will never get minutes on the roster.

In short, the Pacers need a power forward. They don’t need a guard. They don’t need a center. They need a power forward and anything short of that with our lottery pick will likely be a failure in many Pacers’ fans eyes.
