Why the Pacers finances allow them to make some big moves

TJ McConnell, ~$9 million

Our third-string point guard is the next highest paid player on the team in TJ McConnell. TJ has put in good time in Indiana and this isn’t necessarily an overpay, but given that Nembhard surprised so many people so fast there is increasingly looking to be less and less of a role for TJ. Expect to see him floated in a bunch of trade pieces over the summer as a potential target for teams that are looking for a solid backup point guard. I would hate to see him go however given that he seems to bring morale to the team.

Daniel Theis, ~$9 million

Theis was brought over to the Pacers as part of the Brogdon trade, mainly to create a salary match given that the real haul was a first-round pick in the 2023 draft. Theis hasn’t played very much for the Pacers since he arrived but has suited up a few times. If the Pacers were closer to a playoff run they would likely keep him, but given they are still building, don’t be surprised if he is included in any trades they make as salary filler. Some team will be in need of role players to make a playoff push and Theis fits that perfectly.
