The Pacers have an important draft coming up this offseason. Dare we say, the most important draft the team has had in decades. The team is on the upswing but a whiff on this draft would prove as a colossal blow to the rebuild and could cost the franchise buy-in from its most pivotal players.
CBS has come out with their newest mock draft, and in it, they have the Pacers making a troubling pick that would be a disaster for the team. Here is who CBS has going with the top 10 draft picks this summer:
- Victor Wembanyama, Detroit Pistons
- Scoot Henderson, Houston Rockets
- Brandon Miller, San Antonio Spurs
- Cam Whitmore, Charlotte Hornets
- Amen Thompson, Portland Trailblazers
- Keyonte George, Orlando Magic
- Cason Wallace, Indiana Pacers
- Ausar Thompson, Washington Wizards
- Jarace Walker, Utah Jazz
- Nick Smith Jr., Dallas Mavericks
Now, at face value Cason Wallace is a fine pick in the lottery and many years he would not be such a tragic choice. He averaged nearly 12 points per game, four rebounds, and four assists per game. He has promising upside at the next level and recent Kentucky guards have been doing well in the NBA.
But there is a core problem that Pacers would have if they were to take Cason Wallace with their first pick in the NBA draft.
We already have far too many point guards on the roster and an embarrassment of riches at the guard spot.
The Pacers already have too many point guards. They have too many guards for that matter. And while Wallace may turn out to be a phenomenal player, it won’t matter if he doesn’t get any playing time with the Pacers because Haliburton and Nembhard are already soaking up all the minutes.
We not only should draft a forward with our top pick, we MUST draft a forward with our top pick or else we will continue to have a team of pieces that don’t quite fit together on the court.
