Trade for an aging star

The bulls are another familiar foe of the Indiana Pacers, and another team that hasn’t quite achieved what they had hoped at the offset of the season. They may be wanting to move on from the current roster to shake things up and become more competitive with more draft capital. NBA Analysis gives the following trade scenario:

Indiana Pacers Receive: DeMar DeRozan

Chicago Bulls Receive: Buddy Hield, T.J. McConnell, 2023 First Round Pick, 2024 First Round Pick

Let’s get one thing straight, Demar DeRozan is clearly the best player in this trade. And this would certainly be a move that would shake up the Chicago roster and help them obtain draft capital.

But in what world would this make sense for the Pacers? DeRozan certainly can create his own shot, but this would disrupt the flow of the Pacers’ offense, and would essentially duplicate some of the skills we already see with Mathurin. I see no motivation for the Pacers to make such a trade, even if they would be receiving the best player in the deal.

While the Chicago Bulls would likely jump at the chance to get deeper and younger with draft capital, I can’t imagine the Pacers believe that DeRozan is the missing piece needed to make a championship run.
