Indiana Pacers: Rumored Collin Sexton interest makes no sense
The Indiana Pacers will have lots to look forward to in the offseason in the aspect of roster-building with the upcoming NBA Draft and free agency, and the recent reports prove exactly that. However, one entry into the rumor mill makes no sense for the Blue and Gold.
According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Pacers are one of the biggest threats to snatch guard Collin Sexton from the Cleveland Cavaliers in free agency. While the Cavs are looking to build from their near-playoff finish this season, retaining Sexton may not be at the top of their priority lists, especially with the 23-year-old coming off a major injury.
Still, not only is the rumored interest in Sexton from the Pacers quite unlikely, but it is simply a head-scratching tidbit that shouldn’t prosper any further.
The Indiana Pacers should stay away from Collin Sexton in free agency
The backcourt spots are already quite stacked for the Indiana Pacers. Between lead guards Tyrese Haliburton and Malcolm Brogdon, designated shooters Chris Duarte and Buddy Hield, as well as backups TJ McConnell and Duane Washington Jr., the team clearly has no holes in those positions that are glaring enough to demand a big shift.
If anything, what Indiana needs is to trim the fat in the backcourt, ideally via trades, and allocate projected incoming assets to fill more pressing needs. Adding Collin Sexton in this regard, a combo guard who is more of an undersized shooting guard in all honesty, is simply counterintuitive, especially considering how thin their frontcourt rotation is at the present.
On a more visceral look, even if the Pacers are willing to temper their needs for more upside, Sexton is really not the best option to improve what they currently have in store. The 6’1 guard’s scoring prowess is inarguable, and while his efficiency is also not bad for a player of his skill set and stature, he offers little else on the table. His playmaking is notoriously absent, he’s not the most willing three-point shooter, and he’s turnover-prone.

More, signing a player coming off a major injury is already a massive red flag to begin with. While the Indiana Pacers seem true to brand on their reported interest in him, in the face of a crucial, defining offseason, taking rather uncalculated risks is near self-destruction.
The Indiana Pacers have a boatload of options this summer to improve the roster, but pursuing Collin Sexton in free agency will be akin to taking one step forward, and well, three steps back.
