The Indiana Pacers need to find someone to replace Edmond Sumner
Edmond Sumner’s injury is likely going to keep him out for the entire 2021-22 season. He was coming off the best season of his career and seemed to be in line for another step forward under Rick Carlisle. Now, the Pacers need to find someone who can replicate some of what Sumner brought off the bench.
Until the Pacers find consistent defenders, they will struggle to win close games and keep Myles Turner rested. Ed is one of the best perimeter defenders on the roster and he adds some flashes on offense, including an increase to 39.8 percent shooting on three-point attempts. Replacing him is going to be tough.
Oshae Brissett will be the best perimeter defender on the team and he made a name for himself at the end of last season. He should be part of the rotation regardless of Sumner’s status but they still need more.
Using these four scrimmages to find his replacement has to be a priority. Torrey Craig, Chris Duarte, Duane Washington Jr., and Jeremy Lamb are all in the running to earn some of those extra minutes. Lamb, however, is surprisingly still on the roster.
This preseason will provide a good opportunity for a number of young guys to step up and earn a spot in the rotation this season.
