The Indiana Pacers would love Patty Mills’ leadership and daggers off the bench

One of the few holdovers from the mighty 2014 champion Spurs, point guard Patty Mills remained on the Silver and Black even as the franchise started pivoting to a rebuild as the lone holder of the corporate knowledge in San Antonio. Perhaps the most consistent backup floor general in the last decade, Mills might be headed to a new home this offseason, especially with the team expected to go full-throttle with their youth movement.

TJ McConnell is a real flight risk this offseason, especially after a career year. While his skillset is unconventional, teams will undoubtedly pursue his outstanding court vision and pesky defense. While Mills is not the passer that McConnell is, his three-point shooting is worlds better than his. Also, his veteran leadership and basketball IQ honed by Gregg Popovich will be more than welcome in Rick Carlisle’s program.

Few backups can legitimately play in the clutch and perform at a high level in tense situations. Mills has the poise and experience of a champion, and he can lead the bench while also serving as a great fit next to Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert. He should also be a Carlisle favorite for the veteran coach’s customary flare screen and pin down actions with his 38.8 career mark on triples.
