Free agency officially starts on August 2nd, giving all 30 teams the ability to sign players for their future and everything in between, but teams like the Indiana Pacers will start to map out their potential free agent signings well before that date to get ahead of the curve and capitalize on the huge opportunities that lie in front of them in the upcoming market this offseason.

In Indiana’s case, as one of the smallest markets in the association, the organization often struggles to entice the upper echelon, or “max-worthy” players. Indianapolis is a lovely city to people who call it home, like myself. But if you ask DeMar DeRozan if he’d rather spend his time of leisure in Miami Beach or Greenwood, I think I could provide a pretty solid guess as to what his answer would be.

The Indiana Pacers face a summer spree of prospect value signings

However, to Indiana’s advantage, this upcoming free agent market isn’t exactly headlined by as many hard-hitters as previous years. This allows them to fill some rotational holes that could add up into a huge, do-it-yourself makeover going into the next season. There are a lot of quality un-restricted free agents available this offseason that could perform well without the team breaking the bank.

The heavy hitters at the top of the list, Kawhi Leonard and Chris Paul, two All-NBA generational players who see options this summer, are looking at pretty favorable player options and the grass can’t get much greener where they’re at in their careers.

Could Kawhi pull a curveball and jump ship? Absolutely. He did it to Toronto. Could he change the narrative of the infamous George Hill draft-day swap and reunite with Indy? Yes. That is something that he hypothetically could do. But, will it happen? No, no it will not. Much of what we might see from those guys will become a lot clearer after their playoff runs.

Throughout this piece, I will go over four rotational roles that the Pacers front office could improve this offseason that could re-solidify them as an Eastern Conference powerhouse next season.
