Indiana Pacers: Why trading Myles Turner for the No. 2 pick isn’t a good idea

The prospects are not as safe as Myles Turner

If the Pacers would consider this trade you have to look at the prospects that could be there at two. There isn’t a clear cut number one prospect rather there are a couple of prospects that have the ceiling of possibly being great. Those prospects do come with some major question marks. With everything I’ve gathered, Anthony Edwards and James Wiseman are the top two prospects and after that, there are a handful of players that could go in the next couple of spots.

Anthony Edwards is who most mock drafts have going at the number one pick. Edwards is an intriguing talent as he has the size and scoring ability you want for a shooting guard in the NBA. His defense and inconsistent effort are huge question marks that he has been labeled with heading into the draft. Some wonder if he can overcome this and turn into a star.

James Wiseman is a 7-foot center who flashes incredible athleticism and rim running ability. He could come in immediately and provide that role for a team with hopes he can develop his shooting and playmaking ability. I don’t think the Pacers would be interested in Wiseman at two because it would put them in the same situation they are already in with Sabonis and Turner.

Lamelo Ball is considered another top-level prospect because of his height and his ability to make plays. He has to figure out how to fix his jump shot and become some sort of defender. He also needs to work on the selection of shots he takes at the next level. Also, the baggage you’re going to get with him doesn’t seem like something Kevin Pritchard would go for.

Deni Avdija could be a player to consider since he can play the wing and can come in immediately and give playmaking and defense. His jump shot is the biggest question mark with his game and it will be the thing he will have to develop if he wants to become an impactful NBA player.

With how the prospects in this draft aren’t clear cut on what you’re getting I just don’t think that it would be a good move for the Pacers to give up Myles Turner for the second overall pick. The Pacers are obviously in a win-now mindset with how the roster is constructed and I’m not sure by giving away someone that is very vital to the defense for a player that might not be able to play right away is the best move.

Also, we haven’t seen how Myles will fare in the new system under recently hired head coach Nate Bjorkgren. Myles could flourish in the new system. Do I think that this trade could happen? Absolutely because anything can happen in the NBA offseason. Will I think it will happen? Most likely not.
