Pacers draft targets: Jake Toolson

One of the more unique stories in college basketball this season, Toolson sat out all but 10 games in a two-season span from 2015-2017. Starting his collegiate career at BYU, he received a medical redshirt for the 2015-16 season after a season-ending injury 10 games into the season.

Toolson then transferred to Utah Valley and was forced to sit out the 2016-17 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.

After two strong seasons at Utah Valley where he started every game and averaged more than 13 points, Head Coach Mark Pope went to BYU where Toolson followed for his second stint as a Cougar. As a grad transfer, Toolson was immediately eligible and started every game for BYU as the team’s second-leading scorer with 15.2 points per contest.

For his career, Toolson shot 43.3 percent from deep including 47 percent on 5.7 attempts per game as a senior. The sharpshooter led the West Coast Conference in three-point percentage while his 47.2 percent field goal percentage was also the best in the conference.

Toolson is likely a candidate for an undrafted signing. If the Pacers are looking for a shooter late in the draft, Toolson is just that. A shooter. He won’t likely make a game-changing offensive impact in the NBA and has a modest defensive game at 6-5, 205 pounds. Toolson, if he makes it to the league, will be a sharpshooting specialist.
