Indiana Pacers: 4 teams that might steal Justin Holiday this summer
By Josh Wilson
The Boston Celtics are a sleeper destination for Justin Holiday
The Boston Celtics need to make smart money moves this summer. They’re almost certainly going to offer Jayson Tatum a maximum contract extension on his rookie deal, and that comes on the heels of having offered Jaylen Brown a hefty extension last summer.
Gordon Hayward may or may not opt-in for the final year of his contract with the team, which is a player option. Should he opt in, Holiday won’t be going to Boston on account of the team having little money to work with.
If he opts out, though, the Celtics need help on the wings, and they need to make moves that allow them to have general cash flexibility over the next few years to continue to make marginal moves around their core.
An affordable deal with Holiday allows them to fill both of those needs.
Holiday doesn’t offer the same scoring and offensive boost that Hayward does, but one could argue that the Celtics need some supplementary players on that end of the court anyway. Tatum, Walker, and Brown can all light the scoreboard up, and Marcus Smart has proven to be impactful over the years as an offensive option as well.
Holiday can hit a 3-pointer when needed, and can make intelligent reads on the defensive end.
Already a strong defensive team, Holiday only ups the ante for the second unit if they find a way to sign him.
