Indiana Pacers: NBA Draft picks they hold over the next five years

What assets do the Pacers have in the NBA Draft for the foreseeable future?

The Indiana Pacers will not be heavily invested in the top-tier prospects in the NBA Draft this season. They sent their first-round pick to the Milwaukee Bucks in order to secure Malcolm Brogdon this summer.

Their draft pool over the next five years is somewhat complicated. They owe the Nets and Bucks second-round picks that are conditional. The Bucks pick will transfer one year later than the Nets pick, but the Nets pick will not transfer until 2023 unless the Pacers miss the playoffs, in which case it would go to Brooklyn that year.

For instance, here is what their ownership over their first and second-round draft picks would look like if they made the playoffs in each of the next five years:

And here is how the picks would look if they are to miss the playoffs in 2021:

If the team misses the playoffs in 2022 or earlier, they will not own their second-round pick for that season and the season thereafter. So, if 2022 is a “no” on playoffs, the two “nos” in the second round slide down one year each as well.

If they do not miss the playoffs in the next five years or they miss it in 2023 or later the team will not own their own second-round pick in 2023, 2024 or 2025.

Below is a listing of all picks the Pacers own between their own picks and picks they’ve gathered in trades over the years. Info on picks and conditions are via RealGM.

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2020?

The Pacers own no first-round picks in this year’s draft.

The Pacers owe the Brooklyn Nets a second-round pick, but it will not convey this year because the pick is protected from selections 45-60. Since the Pacers are currently a playoff team, it would fall within that range.

  • First-round picks: 0
  • Second-round picks: 1

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2021?

Indiana owns their own first-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

If the team falls out of the playoffs they have a lottery pick, but they will also have to send their second-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets, as the same protection conditions from 2020 apply to the pick this season if not conveyed in 2020.

The Pacers own the Milwaukee Bucks second-round pick. They also own the Jazz second-round pick.

  • First-round picks: 1
  • Second-round picks: 3 if they make the playoffs, 2 if not

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2022?

The Pacers currently own their own first-round draft pick in 2022.

The second-round pick will go to Brooklyn if the team has made the playoffs every year but this one, however, if the Pacers second-round pick conveys in 2021, the Pacers will send their second-round pick to the Bucks in 2022.

The Pacers also own Miami’s second-round draft pick.

So, if they make the playoffs in every season through 2022, they will have two draft picks in the 2022 draft.

  • First-round picks: 1
  • Second-round picks: 2 if the Pacers make the playoffs in 2020, 2021, and 2022. 1 if they miss the playoffs for the first time in 2022. 1 if they miss the playoffs in 2021.

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2023?

Again, the Pacers have their own first-round draft pick.

If the Pacers have made the NBA Playoffs through 2022, their second-round pick will finally convey to Brooklyn this season regardless of if they make the playoffs or not.

If it conveyed in the previous season, the Pacers will send their second-round pick to the Bucks in 2023.

Given that the Pacers are expected to be competitive over the next few years, having a second-round pick this year is unlikely as it would require them to miss the playoffs in 2021.

  • First-round picks: 1
  • Second-round picks: Max of 1 but likely 0.

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2024?

The Pacers own their first-round draft pick in 2024.

If the Pacers have already conveyed their second-round picks owed to the Nets and Bucks by this time, they will have their own second-round pick this year. If not, however, they will need to send their pick to the Bucks.

The only way the Pacers can retain their own second-round pick in 2024 is if they miss the playoffs in at least one season in 2022 or earlier.

  • First-round picks: 1
  • Second-round picks: if Bucks and Nets picks have fulfilled. 0 if the Pacers miss the playoffs for the first time in 2023, which is the most likely projection.

What NBA Draft picks do Pacers own in 2025?

The Pacers have their first-round pick in 2025.

The Pacers sent their second-round pick in this year’s draft to the Bucks as a part of the Malcolm Brogdon sign-and-trade, but supplemented it by bringing in a Heat second-rounder in the T.J. Warren trade.

  • First-round picks: 1
  • Second-round picks: 1
