Indiana Pacers: 15 best scorers in franchise history
11. Clark Kellogg, 1982-87
Pacers scoring: 20.8 ppg, FG: 49.7%, 3P: 33.8%, FT: 75.7%
Clark Kellogg’s transition from college star (Big Ten MVP at Ohio State) to the NBA could not have gone better. Kellogg is currently 23rd on the all-time franchise scoring list, and nearly 93 percent of those 4,918 points came in his first three seasons with the Indiana Pacers.
On offense, you wouldn’t conduct any shooting clinics based on Kellogg’s jump shot, but he was a rolling thunder in the post.
Equal parts a charging buffalo and a Bolshoi ballerina, he possessed a full quiver of post moves, but was also an adept passer out of the post.
During those first three seasons, Kellogg led the Pacers in scoring, accounting for 18 percent of the total scoring.
Kellogg’s Pacers could scoot, after 1985 it would be five seasons before the Pacers matched the point totals that Kellogg’s teams averaged.
The story of Clark Kellogg, Indiana Pacer cannot only be told by his offensive output over his first three years, but it must also include why his story is only three years long.
Injuries, lots and lots of injuries. Kellogg only played in 23 games between 1985-87, and never played again. It was an unfortunate ending to a career that shot out of the gate like Justify at the Kentucky Derby. For a three-year flash, Kellogg showed the promise of a future all-star, and it is that flash which places him on this list.
