Patrick McCaw is an unexpected unrestricted free agent in the middle of the season. The Pacers should try to add him.
Patrick McCaw has been waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The move was announced today, just over a week after the team signed him. This means that McCaw will soon be a free agent, should nobody claim him on waivers. If that happens, the Pacers could be an intriguing fit for McCaw.
McCaw spent his first two seasons with the Warriors before not being resigned this summer for financial reasons. He averaged 4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in Golden State on 42.1 percent shooting.
There is a hurdle to any team signing him. McCaw is in the waiver process, meaning that he can be claimed by any team with the available resources to do so. Indiana is not one of them, but there is a handful:
However, should 5 pm Tuesday come and go without one of those teams claiming Patrick McCaw, he would be available to sign wherever he chooses. If that happens the Pacers should absolutely make the call to his agent and attempt to sign him. They could only offer him a minimum contract, but that is probably the best offer he will get anyway.
