What contract comes next for Darren Collison?

DC is on the wrong side of thirty, so he probably only has one more chance at big money in his career. That should motivate him to be on his A-game this season.

If he performs this season, given how well he shoots the ball from beyond the arc, he could snag a deal in the $20-30 million range over three seasons next summer. Someone will want his shooting and floor spacing on their team, wheater it is off the bench or as a starter.

If he struggles this coming year, his outlook changes a bit. He could potentially snag decent money to start for a team that was trying to tank and not win many games, or he could take smaller money to be a backup for a contender. Those are usually the only types of deals that appear for older guys who aren’t quite starter level anymore, so Collison really needs to perform this season if he wants to avoid that situation.

The Pacers will have his early Bird rights, meaning next summer they could sign him for up to 175% of his salary this season even if they are over the salary cap. They could choose to sign other free agents and then bring back Collison at a reasonable price if they were so inclined.
