Maintaining Future Flexibility

The Pacers have seven expiring contracts on the books heading into this season. If Myles Turner does not receive a contract extension before or during the season, Indiana could enter next summer with over $50 million in space.

They will have to spread that money out to multiple players, but having money when so many teams don’t is always a positive.

Indiana doesn’t have to add a superstar with that money. They can add good players that fit and continue to build around Victor Oladipo with complementary pieces. Or, they can make a trade midseason with the same objectives in mind — with the ability to add long-term money to the books and not have to stress about it.

These aren’t things to worry about right now, as training camp is still about a month away. But it has to be nice for Indiana’s front office to be in this position financially and still have a good product on the court.
