The Indiana Pacers are finalizing their roster by adding a guy with their final two-way contract. They gave it to CJ Wilcox today.
With 14 guys signed to guaranteed contracts and Edmond Sumner in the fold on a two-way contract, the Pacers didn’t have much left to do in terms of roster construction when the sun rose this morning.
Now, they have even less to do. They filled their second and final two-way contract slot with C.J. Wilcox, a guard with three years of NBA experience. He also played for the Pacers in summer league just a few weeks ago.
This signing snuck up on us. In a time where most news is broken via a reporter or news outlet, the Pacers actually reported this news themselves on the official team account:
Wilcox comes to Indiana with three years of NBA experience. He spent his first two seasons as a Los Angeles Clipper, the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2014 NBA draft. After that stint, Wilcox spent a year playing for the Orlando Magic. His NBA averages are two points, .5 rebounds, and .5 assists per game.
He spent last seasons a member of the Portland Trail Blazers organization on the same two-way contract that he just signed with the Pacers. He spent most of the year injured, but he found some playing time in the G League where he poured in 10.4 points per game across 11 games.
A two-way contract means that Wilcox will spend time on both the Indiana Pacers and the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He is allowed 45 days to be a member of the Pacers, which includes both practices and games.
Wilcox, 27, impressed in summer league so much so that he received this deal. He should be a useful addition on a two-way contract. He has enough experience to jump in and play in a pinch if the injury-prone Tyreke Evans goes down, and he also has some upside as a former first-round pick. It’s a great deal for the front office and it comes with minimal risk.
And with this move, Indiana just has one move left, the final roster spot. Who knows if, or when, they will use it. But that is neither here nor there. For now, everyone welcome CJ Wilcox to the organization!
