Pacers/Mad Ants guard Trey McKinney-Jones suits up for team USA

While you were keeping up with NBA free agency, Pacers guard Trey Mckinney-Jones was playing some basketball for Team USA.

NBA free agency has been in full swing over the past few weeks, and it is easy to get caught up in the player movement. But while all that has been going on, Team USA Men’s basketball has been qualifying for the 2019 World Cup.

For qualifying games, instead of bringing out the biggest stars, team USA tends to give opportunities to G League guys and give them a chance to wear the red white and blue. One of those guys selected this season was Mad Ants/Pacers guard Trey Mckinney-Jones.

Here he is in the team picture, wearing number 11 in the front row:

McKinney-Jones didn’t get a ton of minutes for the Indiana Pacers this season. In fact, he only received one total minute of playing time. But he got to make his debut with the Pacers, and now almost five months later, he also got to make his debut for team USA. Sounds like a pretty great year to me.

Team USA set out to play two games, one against Mexico and one against Cuba. Mexico handed the USA a close eight-point loss, but the red white and blue came out with a vengeance against Cuba and put on a clinic, defeating them 93-62.

Trey McKinney-Jones received some playing time in both games. In the first game against Mexico, McKinney-Jones played nearly 20 minutes and had a final stat line of four points, five rebounds, and two assists. Against Cuba, TMJ showed a little more, pouring in 10 points and adding five rebounds and four assists with it.

Overall, McKinney-Jones had a solid showing. But more importantly, he had the great honor of representing his country, something that very few pros get to do.
