The Indiana Pacers entered Game 3 with the knowledge that they can play with the Cleveland Cavaliers in this first round series. They fought back from double-digit deficits in both games to nearly steal a game on the road.
Trailing 0-2, the Pacers were back home in Banker’s Life Fieldhouse and looking to get back into the series. Could they find some defense to combat the Cavs three-point barrage? Would Nate McMillan finally make changes to the starting line-up and shorten the rotation? Or would it be more of the same… a valiant effort, but the best player on earth being just too good?
Here’s how Pacers fans & media reacted to the game on Twitter as it happened:
PREGAME
Pacers' starters, Round 1, Game 3: Jeff Teague, CJ Miles, Paul George, Thaddeus Young & Myles Turner.
— Nate Taylor (@ByNateTaylor) April 20, 2017
There’s been a change to the starting line-up. CJ in, Monta out.
Much to the delight of Pacers fans.

Not sure there’s a bad colorway with this shoe… 🔥🔥🔥

— Clark Wade (@ClarkWade34) April 20, 2017
And it’s a Gold Out… let’s do it!
1st QUARTER
Credit C.J. for attacking on LeBron, a situation where I think many players would have backed it out.
— Scott Agness (@ScottAgness) April 20, 2017
Instead, foul on LeBron + two FTs.
CJ paying dividends early. 10-10 early.
Thad Young can shoot again!
— Dave “Mortgages” Searle (@MillerTimePod) April 20, 2017
Left corner three, then a lay-up on the next possession. Cavs take a timeout. The guys in gold lead 16-13.
Something beautiful about LeBron baiting Lance into a 3-pointer... that he them makes.
— 8 Points, 9 Seconds (@8pts9secs) April 20, 2017
#LanceEffect immediately off the bench.
Pacers up four as Paul George scores his first bucket of the game. Pacers getting good efforts from everyone that's played so far.
— iPacers.com (@iPacersblog) April 20, 2017
Good guys up 23-19.
Kevin SERAPHIN!!!!!
— Michael Grady (@Grady) April 20, 2017
Deepest. Bluest. His hat is like a Seraphin
— Jared Wade (@Jared_Wade) April 20, 2017
Seraphin dunk, Stephenson celebration. It's lit! pic.twitter.com/L6WudjvRyi
— SLAM (@SLAMonline) April 20, 2017
He flies down the lane for a scoop lay-up. Next possession, throws it down with two hands while being fouled. Whoa!
End of 1: Pacers 37, Cavaliers 27. Kevin Seraphin has 9 points. The bench extended the Pacers' lead.
— Nate Taylor (@ByNateTaylor) April 20, 2017
Paul George only has two points, but the Pacers lead by ten, their biggest lead of the series. The bench combined for 19 points in the quarter.
2nd QUARTER
Another Lance 3… Pacers +13.
JESUS LORD ALMIGHTY!
— LSM (@iamlaurenmiles) April 20, 2017
Well, Myles Turner just ended Tristan Thompson. Yikes!
— Nate Taylor (@ByNateTaylor) April 20, 2017
Let’s just say Myles Turner didn’t go double pumping at the rim this time…
https://twitter.com/NBAonTNT/status/855206911003602944
Reach back, young fella! Pacers lead by ten.
And then this happened… Pacers extending the lead as Paul George has scored 10 in a row.
#Myles Turner has answered the call to play more aggressively.
— Clifton Brown (@CliftonGBrown) April 21, 2017
After taking Thompson’s soul on that dunk, Myles sends a Thompson lay-up attempt into the third row.
Another Paul George three-pointer and the lead swells to 22, 62-40. Indiana is playing with all the confidence and fairly solid defense.

Some things never change…
The Pacers should have been playing like this all season...
— Dave “Mortgages” Searle (@MillerTimePod) April 21, 2017
...but that's none of my business. pic.twitter.com/xPKaKw5FwL
Well… that would’ve been nice, for sure.
PG knocks down ANOTHER 3. He has 19 points in the quarter. Pacers by 26!
Halftime: Pacers 74, Cavaliers 49. Paul George has 23 points & 9 rebounds. Indiana produced its most 1st half points in franchise history.
— Nate Taylor (@ByNateTaylor) April 21, 2017
Paul George “called out his teammates” & his teammates responded. Then, he took over. Pacers +25 at half. Indiana is shooting 57% from the field, including 10-17 from behind the line. A masterful first half against a Cleveland team that looked fairly disinterested.
The key to the series is making all your shots. https://t.co/RSvtydDjSN
— 8 Points, 9 Seconds (@8pts9secs) April 21, 2017
Accurate.
2nd quarter: Cavs 22, Paul George 21.
— Adam Best (@adamcbest) April 21, 2017
Pacers entered tonight with a 115.3 Offensive Rating through the first two games. It’s currently at 143.4 just for tonight. Cavs ….
— Shane Young (@YoungNBA) April 21, 2017
Is that good? I’m not sure, but it seems good.
Ok, everybody… calm down. This is still the Pacers we’re talking about here. Heartbreak can come just as swiftly as this lead was built.
The Pacers are obviously about to score 28 points in the second half. It's too predictable.
— Jared Wade (@Jared_Wade) April 21, 2017
See… that’s a true Pacers fan right there. Mr. Wade knows.
Before the game, PG was selfish for calling out his teammates.
— Jon Washburn (@DeanOfMortgages) April 21, 2017
Now, he's a good leader because those teammates responded well. #FakeNews
Oh, national media.
The dunk. #PhantomCam #NBAPlayoffs pic.twitter.com/Vt2eKRPeFO
— NBA (@NBA) April 21, 2017
Can’t stop looking at this!
3rd QUARTER
Pacers led by 25 at the break, but the Cavs cut it to 15 in four minutes via a 13-3 run.
— Scott Agness (@ScottAgness) April 21, 2017
And here come the champs… Pacers offense has gone stagnant. Cavs knocking down threes and the lead is starting to dwindle.
Pacers playing like they're scared they're gonna blow this.
— Jon Washburn (@DeanOfMortgages) April 21, 2017
Pacers fans scared they're gonna blow this.
We know how this movie goes.
Nate McMillan T’d up arguing why Paul George isn’t getting foul calls.
— Scott Agness (@ScottAgness) April 21, 2017
Chill, Nate. Chillllllllllllllllll.
& LANC3 THREEVENSON
— iPacers.com (@iPacersblog) April 21, 2017
LANCE FOR THREE! #BoomBaby
— Indiana Pacers (@Pacers) April 21, 2017
IND 87, CLE 67 with 4:36 left in Q3
Lance has hit three from downtown. The Pacers are 58,374-0 when he does that. #LanceEffect
Pacers have missed so many gimmes and put-backs this quarter. Cavs capitalizing, are within 13.
— Jon R. LaFollette (@JonLawFilet) April 21, 2017
Pacers lead 87-74.
Additionally, the offense is back to stagnant. The Cavs are coming…
Defense is clueless, again. Lance is dancing too much. Needs to get into the offense quicker.
— Caitlin Cooper (@C2_Cooper) April 21, 2017
The lead has been cut to single digits with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter.
6-point game. LOL. We knew this was happening.
— Jared Wade (@Jared_Wade) April 21, 2017
Yup.
That 3rd couldn't end quickly enough for the Pacers. A 25 point halftime lead is down to 7. 91-84 Pacers. 12 minutes to play.
— Pat Boylan (@PatBoylanPacers) April 21, 2017
Can the Pacers find that offensive rhythm they had in the 1st half? A lot of standing and watching, not a lot of player movement. On to the 4th…
4th QUARTER
Can't believe the Pacers are really gonna rook us.
— Jon Washburn (@DeanOfMortgages) April 21, 2017
Well on their way to rookin’ us. The lead keeps getting shorter and shorter.
Evidence starting to suggest that Korver is a better shooter than Lance.
— Jared Wade (@Jared_Wade) April 21, 2017
Lance takes the bait, shoots an ill-advised three. Clank. On the other end, LeBron with a sublime pass to Korver for a corner three. The lead is five, 9:36 left.
The Cavaliers are making a lot of 3s. I get it. Just wonder why Nate McMillan waited so long to put Myles Turner & Jeff Teague in the game.
— Nate Taylor (@ByNateTaylor) April 21, 2017
Many Pacers fans wondering the same thing. Myles in, but no Teague yet as Ellis is summoned.
Pacers fans to Nate McMillan right now. pic.twitter.com/QT3XIrktxT
— 8 Points, 9 Seconds (@8pts9secs) April 21, 2017
We NOT live baby… NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I see no lies…
Pacers going small out of the timeout.
— Jon R. LaFollette (@JonLawFilet) April 21, 2017
Teague
Monta
PG
CJ
Turner
Monta still in? Thad still out? How Sway?!
26-point lead is gone.
— Scott Agness (@ScottAgness) April 21, 2017
Cleveland has its first lead since the opening period. 100-98.
LeBron with the right hand hammer. The ship be sinkin’.
PG for three! He puts the #Pacers back in the lead with 5:00 to play.
— Indiana Pacers (@Pacers) April 21, 2017
IND 104, CLE 103
“I’m thankful” © Marshawn Lynch
True.
Ellis is still in, Thad is still out. This is unreal.
He throws in another three and Cavs lead 111-107 with 2:50 left. This dude is amazing.
PG goes into the lane, gets fouled. No call & the ball is off of him. Yeah, that sucked.
I hate basketball. LOL.
— LSM (@iamlaurenmiles) April 21, 2017
Don’t we all. Channing Frye buries a dagger three-pointer to put the Cavs up seven with less than a minute left.
— iPacers.com (@iPacersblog) April 21, 2017
And that’s the game. The Pacers blow a 26-point lead to lose Game 3 119-114. The blown 25-point halftime lead is the biggest in NBA playoff history.
A lot of blame to go around for this historic collapse. The players seem to let their foot off the gas. The Cavs got a pretty good whistle in the second half (just like the Pacers got a good whistle in the first half).
But the combination of Nate McMillan’s decisions with the lineup combinations and the lack of ball movement/player movement offensively ultimately led to Indiana’s demise.
Game 4, which is presumably the final game of the Pacers season, is Sunday afternoon.
