Post-Game Grades: Boring Bulls Beat Boring-er Pacers

Who else spent their Saturday night watching what Mike Prada of SB Nation called “a rock fight” between the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls? Did you also get to miss the Marquette win over Butler? And most of the Wichita State upset of Gonzaga?

It wasn’t worth it.

It was a bad game between two teams that didn’t play well, with the Pacers out-crapping the Bulls (while shooting 4-for-20 in the fourth quarter, including 3-for-10 from three-point range). It was a game that will be remembered by few, loved by fewer and is only notable for being yet another low moment for Indiana in a month full of disappointment.

Also, it was noteworthy that Nate Robinson horse-collar tackled Lance Stephenson on a breakaway. He got tossed and — in the opinion of this onlooker — should be suspended for another game or two. That was a horse shit play that has no place in basketball. You can mess up a dude’s life that way. Lance, for example, has grossed about $2 million so far in his career. If he tears an ACL landing awkwardly — or worse — he may never get a good contract.

Big-time dick move.

Bulls Pacers

Here is how each guy played individually tonight. Agree? Disagree? Express your thoughts below in the comments or yell at me (@8pts9secs) or Tim (@TimDonahue8p9s) on Twitter.

Tyler Hansbrough, PF 28 MIN | 3-6 FG | 1-2 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 7 PTS | +1

Wah wah.

Paul George, SF 37 MIN | 9-20 FG | 4-5 FT | 11 REB | 2 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 23 PTS | +3

Shot well early but settled for some mid-range jumpers and didn’t value the ball late, taking one “why not?” three and throwing away a bad pass in hopes of sparking a fast break

Roy Hibbert, C 35 MIN | 8-18 FG | 2-2 FT | 12 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 3 TO | 18 PTS | +6

Played strong on both ends to start the game, but didn’t even take a shot in the fourth quarter. Not entirely his fault, and his improving offensive game is nice. He just needs to find a way for it not to disappear entirely for full quarters.

George Hill, PG 33 MIN | 3-8 FG | 3-3 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | +7

Not good, but managed to hit two threes late (including one four-point play) that gave Indiana a chance. It was also a drive-and-kick by him that led to the potential game-tying three-pointer by Paul George.

Lance Stephenson, SG 35 MIN | 2-5 FG | 5-8 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 2 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 10 PTS | -2

Not all that productive. Had a series of nice steals. Made an open three, which was a nice change of pace from recent weeks. Nearly got his neck broken by Nate Robinson being a jackass.

Jeff Pendergraph, PF 20 MIN | 2-4 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 6 PTS | -4

Hurry back, David West.

Sam Young, SF 4 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | 0

Sam Young.

Gerald Green, SF 11 MIN | 2-8 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 5 PTS | -9

Wasn’t so bad.

Ian Mahinmi, C 13 MIN | 1-4 FG | 2-2 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | -9

His typical self, but with more missed shots.

D.J. Augustin, PG 15 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -10

Didn’t score in 15 minutes.

Orlando Johnson, SG 9 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +1Didn’t score in 9 minutes.
Frank Vogel

Seemed to wait too long to go back to the starters in the fourth as the game was slipping away. Second game of a back-to-back and Lance was perhaps shaken up, but Pendergraph and Green were curtailing the team’s chances to win and both remained on the floor until there was only 5:30 left to play.

Tyler shoots 50% and leads the team in assists finishes a +1 and gets worst grade, yet Green and Ian shoot 25% on double combined shots go -9 each and have the same rebound total and bot get better grades…….Seems Legit.

In his first 4 starts Tyler has played zero seconds into the 4th and averaged 13.25 shots and 6.75 FTA over those 3 quarters, after leading the team in scoring last game he gets just 4 shots and 2 FTA until final 2:32 of the game and then they have him take long ass jumpers? Thanks Frank! No wonder you have us at just 15-19 on the road and vs winning teams with a big 4 game trip around the corner and the next two vs winning teams.

You know a good way to slow down Boozer on offense? Make him play some defense!

We basically gave him a night off with Tyler not taking it to him hardly at all. He doesn’t want any part of playing defense Tyler got next no real touches on him. He shot 3 of his 6 shots as jumpers with another coming on a fast break. So just 2 whole shots driving on him and one of those came in the first 30 seconds and the refs missed him getting slapped across the elbow on that play, the other he drove him to the hoop for a reverse layup from out by the arc and the only time we really posted Tyler up on him deep Tyler took it at him he drew a foul and 2 FT.

So 30 seconds in Tyler gets a shot then he takes 3 more over the next 44:28 of game time making all 3 including a trip to the line on the only legit post up and drive before getting to take two long broke jumpers late. Talk about giving Boozer a day off, Frank should give back his game check for that foolish game plan as 2 of 3 drives ended in points and it should have been 3 of 3 if not a missed call on the first trip.

Also you know the offense is broke if Tyler ends up tied for the team high in Assists in almost 7 less MP than the person he was tied with. The Bulls bench shot just 35.1% but we dropped a 23.8% to help lose the bench battle 32-15 with combined +/- of +16 to -31 for the Bulls. After shooting 6 and 7 for 13 the previous two games Gerald Green has gone 2-for-12 over the last two games.

LOL at C grade for Frank, does the C stand for C-learly the most overrated coach in the league? Because if not that would be far more accurate. Still love our PF who are 2nd and 3rd at their position and shoot 5-of-10 50% leaving the rest of the team to hit 25-of-68 36.8% and they are the ones who get scapegoated, seriously the bench shot 17.6% without Jeff’s makes. PG shot 1-of-6 in the 4th and 3-of-11 in the second half, Non Pendy bench players 11.1% in second half.

The grades are pretty arbitrary, I wouldn’t stress it too much. I hate to be that guy, but it’s just one game. We basically have the 7th best record in the entire league. I’d personally cut Vogel some slack, but I get the criticism. They’ll get it right. Don’t forget David West’s important, especially against big, athletic teams. Hopefully they play better on this next road trip west of Indy.

I think your comment about Nate Robinson is harsh. He did not “horse collar” him, nor was it malicious. Nate just grabbed him around the shoulders and arm to prevent the shot, but the momentum of the play caused Lance to lose his balance. Sure, it could have been serious, but it wasn’t, nor did Nate mean to cause that kind of harm. Watch the play again with more objectivity and you’ll see what I mean. Let’s also give Lance some props for solid acting after he hit the floor.

He definitely deserved the flagrant 2. That much is certain, though the WGN annoucers didn’t see it that way, somehow. It is an exceedingly dangerous play that the NBA has tried to cut out of the sport entirely by the way the flagrant 2 foul is structured. With the kind of momentum Lance and others get going, getting thrown off balance in the air with a tug up top with no attempt at going for a legitimate basketball play on the ball is a nonsensical play and one that is rightly being severely punished. I’m all for tough fouls and physical play, but if you’re making a play at the man and not the ball, you deserve whatever you get in punishment, especially when it’s a play that potentially puts someone’s long-term health at risk. Thankfully, Lance was alright, but if he had rotated just a bit more and landed directly on his head/neck, I don’t think you would have the same view on the issue whatever Nate’s intentions were.
