NBA Mock Draft 12th Pick: San Antonio Spurs – Josh Giddey

The San Antonio Spurs, the bastion of consistency in the NBA for what seemed like an eternity, has now missed two straight playoffs for the first time in history. Well into the aftermath of its storied dynasty, the team is now rebuilding, albeit competitively, around a backcourt-powered young core.

With leading scorer DeMar DeRozan highly unlikely to remain in the Alamo City, the Spurs would be wise to draft a player who can help elevate the team’s young studs in DeJounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker. Perhaps, using their renowned eye for international prospects will once again help them big this time around.

Australia’s Josh Giddey, who may just be the best passer among his peers, should be a solid get at 12th overall. The 6’8 playmaker is an excellent passer who thrives in both fast break and half court opportunities. While his shooting is quite raw, San Antonio’s shooting doctor, Chip Engelland, should be able to prepare him for the big stage, especially with the team’s dearth of three-point shooting.
