Indiana Pacers: Best player in franchise history from each SEC program
Best Indiana Pacers Player from Mississippi St.: Erick Dampier
Erick Dampier was drafted 10th overall in 1996 as the draft pick acquired from the Nuggets in the trade that saw Jalen Rose come to Indiana and Mark Jackson head west. He played just one season with the Pacers before being sent to Golden State in exchange for an aging Chris Mullin.
Dampier saw solid minutes as a rookie including 21 starts in 72 games. The big man tallied 5.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game which included a pair of double-doubles.
Dampier went on to play 16 seasons in the league with the Warriors, Mavericks, Heat, and Hawks.
Best Indiana Pacers Player from Missouri: Steve Stipanovich
An all-American during his senior season, Steve Stipanovich was selected second overall in the 1983 draft behind Ralph Sampson. The 6-11 center wasted little time cracking the Pacers’ lineup starting 73 games his rookie season en route to 12.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. He averaged more than 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds over each of the next four seasons and even helped the team return to the playoffs in 1987 after missing out the previous five seasons.
A chronic knee condition caused Stipanovich to miss the entire 1988-89 season and forced him to retire in 1989 after a five-year career that saw him average 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
