2017 NBA Mock Draft: Who will the Indiana Pacers select at No. 18?
It’s unclear if he’d come over right away, but Rodions Kurucs could a solution to the Thunder’s long-standing struggles with wing depth. Only 19 years old, Kurucs is already finishing at the rim at a high level and can make plays for others. He could not only really help OKC from a creation standpoint when Russell Westbrook sits, but also spot up on the wing when Russ is running the show.
He’s got to be able to reach a passable level on defense and on the glass for any of this to be possible, which means he needs several pounds of muscle. He’s shown encouraging signs of 3-point range, but it’s not there consistently yet. Kurucs could be exactly what the Thunder need, but they may not have time to wait for him to deliver.
You can’t improve at being 7-foot-2, so Jonathan Jeanne has a permanent advantage. His height and wingspan, along with his impressive athleticism make him an immediate threat in the pick-and-roll and as a rim protector. His 3-point range isn’t here yet, but there’s reason to hope that it could get here eventually.
Brook Lopez isn’t going to be on the roster by the time the Nets are close to respectable, and I don’t have high hopes about Justin Hamilton. Jeanne could be the center of the future in Brooklyn if he gets stronger and finds his shooting stroke.
He has a lot of little things to learn, but that’s the thing about being 20: He’s got time, and he’s already mastered that being-really-freaking-tall part. Jeanne will be dunking on fools in no time.
