Best Indiana Pacers Player from Georgia: Vern Fleming

The Pacers took Vern Fleming with the 18th overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. The Third-Team All-American immediately took over the point guard responsibilities starting 65 games his rookie season. He averaged 14.1 points, four rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per night during his first NBA campaign and continued to impress during his early seasons.

He helped turn the Pacers into regular playoff teams and championship-caliber teams in the 1990s. He and future Hall of Famer Reggie Miller created a dominant backcourt in the league for nearly a decade before Fleming signed with the Nets in free agency before the 1995-96 season which would be his last.

In 11 seasons with the Pacers, he averaged 11.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.4 rebounds and still ranks second in franchise history for career assists. His 520 games played rank third in the Pacers’ record book.
