Pacers draft targets: Myles Powell

The Pacers likely will not be in the market for another point guard. The 6-2 guard would only add to the point guard logjam Indiana already has with minutes going to Malcolm Brogdon, Aaron Holiday, T.J. McConnell, and Edmond Sumner. If the Pacers are interested in adding an experienced, high-volume shooter in the draft, Powell may be their best option.

Powell knocked down just 30.6 percent of his 9.2 3-point attempts per game in 2019-20. It was the worst shooting display of his four-year career at Seton Hall despite averaging 21 points on nearly 40 percent shooting from the field.

What makes Powell different from fellow point guard Markus Howard? Powell doesn’t need the ball in his hands to score and be an effective offensive threat.

For his career, Powell shot 34.6 percent from deep and made 2.7 long balls per contest. He scored 17.5 points per contest over 129 games for the Pirates including 20-plus point averages his final two seasons. As a senior, Powell was named a consensus All-American and Big East Player of the Year to round out his college career.

Powell can also create shots with the ball in his hand and would benefit from having an efficient group of offensive players around him in Indiana. A second unit of McConnell at point and Powell at the shooting guard plus Justin Holiday and Doug McDermott playing forward would give the Pacers a significant outside presence with all four being able to knock down shots.
