Stability and a contingency plan in a backup point guard

The Pacers made two big signings this year bolstering their frontcourt when they signed Malcolm Brogdon and T.J. Mcconnell to multi-year deals this summer.

McConnell is on contract through next season, Brogdon until 2023.

Both are high-level options in their respective roles. Brogdon is a former 50/40/90 club player and Rookie of the Year. While his contract came at an extremely high price in both cap space and assets given up, having him on the books for years to come gives the Pacers stability moving forward.

The one concern with Brogdon is that he has a fairly consistent injury history. More on that later.

While McConnell has his defensive deficiencies, he more than makes up for his shortcomings with an unrelenting energy and enthusiasm, and often finds ways to set his teammates up and contribute in ways that typical backup guards might not.

McConnell is an extremely consistent player. Before landing in Indy, since 2015, no player has played more games for the 76ers and he’s rarely missed time due to injury.

While we can count on Brogdon being out for spurts throughout his time in Indiana, McConnell can step up, and so can Aaron Holiday if needed.

Holiday provides another layer of certainty for the backcourt. He’s had a solid sophomore season and could take the typical third-year leap next year. The Pacers have a team option on his contract the season after this and he has every incentive to prove he is worthy of a larger contract.

The backcourt slot is one of the fulcrums of the team. The Pacers may not have a star player to slot into the 1, but they have several reliable players to utilize in the backcourt.
