The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery could be the most important lottery in decades. Teams like the Lakers, the Sixers, the Kings and the Celtics are all betting big on the ping pong balls going their way.

May 16 will be a monumentally important night in determining the landscape of the NBA over the next several years thanks to the NBA Draft Lottery. More than in any year in recent memory, the gap between the best and worst-case scenarios is quite wide for quite a few teams.

The Los Angeles Lakers could keep their pick if it falls inside the top three. If it doesn’t, however, it goes to Philadelphia and the Lakers also forfeit their 2019 first-rounder to Orlando. That would be a crippling blow to a team that’s tired of rebuilding.

The Sacramento Kings received a top-three protected pick from the New Orleans Pelicans in the DeMarcus Cousins trade. Unfortunately for them, the good news stops there. If the Kings win the lottery, their pick goes to the Sixers, who have swap rights thanks to the Sauce Castillo Landry Fields trade. Those swap rights are protected 11-30, which doesn’t really mean anything because the Sixers can’t fall farther than seventh. If by some act of God, Sacramento gets jumped by three teams behind them, they’d lose their pick to Chicago. The most likely scenario is the Kings have two really nice first-round picks. But c’mon. Do you really think it’s going to go well for Sacramento?

Pacers fans should be watching like hawks to see what happens to potential Paul George suitors like Boston and the Lakers. If the Lakers hold on to their pick, that could significantly alter any trade talks that might happen this summer. The same goes for where Boston’s pick via the Nets winds up.
