This further proves that the Pacers are not tanking for a draft pick after the unfortunate event during the USA Basketball scrimmage. They still believe they can rack up enough wins to compete for a playoff spot with Marion on the team. I’m not sure how likely this will happen. Other teams can easily make a better pitch to Marion. He met with Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt yesterday. I hear LeBron James is fun to play with.
Nonetheless the Pacers don’t have anyone on the wing that can defend at an elite level. Better yet no wing on the roster is even above-average at defending. Shawn Marion is aging but last season he displayed he can still defend multiple positions, rebound and score when needed. If Indiana snags him away from other teams, this is a top five defensive team.
Marion averaged 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds over 31.7 minutes last season with the Mavericks.
