Post-Game Grades: "Hey, Guys. It's Me, the Awful Pacers. Mind if I Stop Back By?"

postgamegrades_inpost

The Good: Nobody got injured, I don’t think.

The Bad: Starting the game so poorly. There were a lot of execution flaws and some blown assignments on defense for sure. But it’s just startling to see a team come out so flat in from of its home court in a Game 1. Especially after staving off embarrassment and playing so strong in a Game 7 in the same building just two days ago. Now, “energy” and “passion” and “intensity” aren’t what lost this game by any means, but it would be easier to forgive some of the other issues if you saw a bit of fire before the team falls down by 13.

MVP: Bradley Beal. He played like an aged veteran late when Indiana (sorta) threatened to challenge the Wizards. What a player this guy is now. Imagine him in five years.

LVP: This is like trying to pick my favorite Biggie Smalls verse. There’s at least eight candidates, and I could make a good case for any of them.

X Factor: Drew Gooden scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 points was a long shot in 2008. Ya know, around the same time Paul George was getting ready for his senior prom.

Washington Wizards 102 Final
Recap | Box Score
96 Indiana Pacers
David West, PF 38 MIN | 6-15 FG | 3-4 FT | 12 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 15 PTS | +11

15 points on 15 shots isn’t going to get it done if we’re gonna be honest with one another.

Paul George, SF 43 MIN | 4-17 FG | 9-9 FT | 6 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 18 PTS | -13

Shooting stats aren’t cool, but didn’t really dislike his offense all that much. His defense on Ariza was awful though. He just kept floating, not really helping yet staying far enough away from Trevor to ensure he could bury a jumper. Weak.

Roy Hibbert, C 18 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 2 BLK | 2 TO | 0 PTS | -17

My man.

George Hill, PG 33 MIN | 6-11 FG | 3-5 FT | 4 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 18 PTS | -5

You don’t get extra credit for making 3s after the game is over.

Lance Stephenson, SG 35 MIN | 4-13 FG | 2-2 FT | 6 REB | 2 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 4 TO | 12 PTS | +9

4 turnovers is too many and the shooting wasn’t cool. Brought some needed energy at least.

Luis Scola, PF 27 MIN | 6-11 FG | 0-2 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 2 BLK | 1 TO | 12 PTS | 0

Blocking some shots even.

Evan Turner, SF 19 MIN | 2-4 FG | 3-3 FT | 2 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 7 PTS | -8

Not a fan of his work tonight, but numbers are good.

Chris Copeland, SF 1 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | +4

Garbage time.

Ian Mahinmi, C 12 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -10

His worst game in awhile. Couldn’t box out, got early fouls.

C.J. Watson, PG 15 MIN | 3-5 FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 9 PTS | -1

Played pretty well, but it’s understandable why he only got 15 minutes. Wait? Does “understandable” not mean “I totally don’t understand this”? The opposite then.

Pretty spot on analysis this evening. Its like a broken record, but when you’re down and nothing is working-shouldn’t Copeland get a shot? Much like your CJ comment I just don’t understand. We should’ve seen Cope mid to late third.

      But his defense is terrible!

Oh… wait… the entire team was playing crap defense and no one could put together any offense… sounds familiar…

    no Vogel grade?

    • Jaret Binford

I actually thought he was out coaching Wittman(not hard to do) until he put Hibbert back in at the end. The bench disparity between the two teams is going to be huge. Wittman can’t rest his starters in this series

And Vogel can barely afford to play some of his starters. I’m still waiting for them to figure out how to properly space the floor.

The players looked tired and slow. Except for Scola and Turner who of course didn’t play the last two games. Playing everyone 40+ minutes in game 7, Vogel should have been ready to give the bench an extended run, especially since, you know, they were outplaying the starters. As it is PG played 43 minutes and might be even worse in game 2.

Apparently Copeland’s good play in Atlanta earned him no credit.

Mahinmi and Hibbert combined for 30 minutes and zero rebounds, which is really stunning.

It’s as if the Atlanta series never happened, or at least the coaching staff learned NOTHING from it. This was deja vu all over again.
