Post-Game Grades: Terrible Pacers Smoked by Spurs

postgamegrades_inpost

The Good - The third quarter, when Indiana showed some semblance of being a decent basketball team while outscoring the Spurs 24-21. They hit 8-of-16 shots, and it could have been even better if they didn’t turn the ball over 6 times in the period.

The Bad - A 15-point first quarter. Some of it was David West missing makable shots (0-for-4 in the period), but you simply cannot start a game off shooting 5-for-17 against the best team in the NBA right now and expect to win.

MVP - Tony Parker. He is a marvel. I even liked George Hill’s defense at times.

LVP - Luis Scola and David West. A combined 9 points on 3-for-12 shooting. They need to make shots. Period.

X Factor - Gregg Popovich. He’s the best I’ve ever seen.

San Antonio Spurs 103 Final
Recap | Box Score
77 Indiana Pacers
David West, PF 29 MIN | 2-6 FG | 3-4 FT | 8 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 7 PTS | -12

Got hit the eye early and played like a blind man the rest of the game. Did rebound aggressively.

Paul George, SF 36 MIN | 5-13 FG | 5-8 FT | 6 REB | 5 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 16 PTS | -19

Make some tough shots. Would be nice if he didn’t have to, and he still doesn’t seem to understand that certain critical possessions must be valued more than others, but it wasn’t as bad as we’ve seen in some other games. Tried to attack the hoop, earned FTs.

Roy Hibbert, C 34 MIN | 5-13 FG | 5-6 FT | 7 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 15 PTS | -18

Struggled to get position at times, but made some shots after nice moves.

George Hill, PG 37 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 7 PTS | -19

No assists, but good defense overall and wasn’t bad.

Lance Stephenson, SG 28 MIN | 6-13 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 15 PTS | -12

Had an exuberant stretch in the 2nd quarter that gave the team some life. Played bad in the fourth by and large.

Luis Scola, PF 15 MIN | 1-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -10

What would ya say ya do here?

Evan Turner, SF 7 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -8

Got benched in the second half in favor of Rasual Butler.

Ian Mahinmi, C 11 MIN | 1-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | -4

Had a cool dunk.

Donald Sloan, PG 11 MIN | 1-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | -7

Drove to the hoop for a layup. Missed the 5 other shots he took, which, ya know, don’t do that.

Rasual Butler, SG 22 MIN | 2-3 FG | 2-2 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -9

Hit a sweet 3. Arguably Indiana’s best bench player these days.

Having nothing to do with recent RESULTS, I have to say I am embarrassed by this team’s play. I couldn’t make it past the first quarter of this game because of the total lack of edge the Pacers showed. We came in looking like we weren’t sure if we wanted to be on the court against an opponent that we should have been up to play. The Spurs are the best team in the league right now and on our home court we came out and looked like we hated playing basketball. The Pacers missed shots because they were hesitant to shoot it and looked like basketball was a job that they were forced to do rather than a game they were given loads of money to play.

I just want to curl up in a corner and cry. Roy got the touches he was asking for (never mind he almost always got pushed out of the block or onto the wing) and no real result. Do we have other offensive schemes besides post-entry-pass-then cutting, PG/Lance ISO, Scola or D West jumper? Let’s see who they each blame after tonight’s game.

Screw the “rhythm”. Just be bold and rest all the starters and maybe Scola until the playoffs. We clinched the 2-seed about a month ago, so why not at least take some advantage of our good start to the year instead of searching for some miraculous cure and making everyone miserable. Sludging through .500 ball from now until the first round isn’t going to do us any good. If we’re not energised for the challenge come playoffs, then forget it. Might as well have fresh legs too though.

At this current moment, the only guy playing with confidence out there is Ian Mahinmi. (I’d say Rasual, too, but I’m not sure he requires confidence.) We already knew coming into the season that Big Roy needs to be confident to play well. We’re now witnessing what it’s like when an entire team has zero confidence. Evan Turner. David West. Luis Scola. George Hill. Paul George. No confidence. That’s why we’re only scoring in the 70s every game recently. It’s not our offense, it’s our confidence. When you’re not confident, you miss shots. This was written ALL OVER David West’s performance tonight.

Seems like the season got too long for us or something. So damn disappointing.

Also, I can’t believe we traded Danny Granger for a guy who’s not in the rotation. Sigh.

The Pacers don’t look like they like each other very much. I feel like Bird needs to go in and dress down the team at this point. I’m not sure there’s another option.

Turner should be benched until he forces his way back into the rotation. He’s just getting worse and worse.

I’m travelling for the rest of the week which should make it hard for me to watch any more games, for that I am thankful as it’s just depressing at this point.

After giving themselves a decent lead, this losing streak has pretty much ended the Pacers shot at a 1 seed. They’ve proven themselves utterly incapable of winning on the road and incapable of beating good teams (other than Miami) anywhere. With 4 of their last 7 on the road and one home game against OKC, the race for the 1 seed is over. Miami plays 6 of their last 9 at home and plays a weaker schedule. The Pacers essentially gave away all the work they did from November to March. The way they’re playing right now, they’ll be lucky to even make it to the conference finals. Unless they get that early season magic back somehow, this season is going in the books as a failure.
