In the spirit of today being Valentine’s Day, I can’t pass up an opportunity to profess my love for the Indiana Pacers. But what do I love about this team? Sure I live here in Indy and have been following this team all my life. I love those battles with the New York Knicks. I love Reggie Miller. I love Blue and Gold. I love going to a game at Banker’s Life Field House. Just to name a few general loves.
Let’s get into what I love about this year’s Indiana Pacers.
1. I love DEFENSE. That’s right, defense wins championships as we saw in the Super Bowl this year with the dominant performance of the Seattle Seahawks. Even crowning a Super Bowl MVP on the defensive side of things. That could bode well for the top defensive team of the NBA, and it’s candidates for Defensive Player of the Year in Roy Hibbert and Paul George.
George will go out and guard the best player on the other side, while Roy Hibbert holds down the fort in the middle. A guy beats his man, and looks who’s waiting there for them, Roy Hibbert. Did you ever use the word “verticality” until Hibbert was here playing defense? How often do we say “his arms were straight up” when Hibbert might get the foul on the defensive side of things? That’s how important the DEFENSE of the Indiana Pacers is.
2. I love TEAM. That’s right, this is a team. It can be said there’s a superstar in the making in Paul George. But guess what? Does Paul George go out and dominant every night like Lebron James or Kevin Durant? Not always so. When it comes time, George could become that stature. But this is a team in every sense of the word.
Did you have just Paul George featured in that ESPN sit down interview a few months back? Nope, it was the entire starting five. Tell me how many times that type of thing has happened. I’ll wait for your answer. This is a team of guys out there playing for each other. It just comes out in the interviews. It comes out in the selfish play of a guy who will give up the ball to another guy for an easy score.
This is Indiana’s TEAM.
3. I love BLUE AND GOLD. If you watch the Snack Time With Stephen videos, and if you haven’t, go watch. Shameless plug complete. But every episode, I am there sporting my Blue and Gold sweatshirt. That’s my winter coat. That’s my spring jacket. That’s my house coat. That’s my throw on sweatshirt to do something. I’ve been wearing the BLUE AND GOLD even when it wasn’t so popular to wear the Blue and Gold.
