Frank Vogel Earns 150th Win

Congratulations to Coach Frank Vogel on his 150th win. If Wikipedia is correct that would move him to fourth on the list of coaches for most victories of the Indiana Pacers. He just sits behind Rick Carlisle (181), Larry Brown (190), and the should be Hall of Famer Bobby Leonard (529). I don’t think Vogel reaches that many wins as Leonard did, but you would believe that getting to that second spot on the list is very doable with the way the Pacers are set for the next few years.

It’s amazing to think that Vogel has done such a wonderful job coaching up this team since he took it over, but I don’t believe his name will come up in any Coach of the Year candidates because this type of success was expected. But I will still hold to that fact that you need to do something right coaching wise to have the best record in the league. At least, he did earn the right to coach up the Eastern Conference All Stars, so that’s definitely worth it.

Just a few years ago, this team was in dire need of a new coach. I know it’s all been rehashed before, but I think it’s important to look back at that time and what was going on. Vogel took over the team from Jim O’Brien, a guy who I never thought was a good fit here. But what’s interesting about his time here was that he did put together 121 victories, but he definitely lost that team the years he was here.

Vogel getting the nod to be the next Pacers’ coach was a breath of fresh air and optimism. I still don’t believe you’ve heard Vogel say a negative thing about this team publically. Sure, you could say he might have said something behind the closed doors. But I do believe that he’s just an optimistic guy and one that doesn’t believe in the negative approach to coaching a team. A guy that started at the bottom as working with video tape and now has the best team in the league. Once again, what a journey that has been for Vogel.

He has come a long way since spinning a basketball on a toothbrush on the David Letterman show.

Congratulations again to Mr. Vogel and here’s to another 150 wins.
